Warning - Get Ready For The Time Of Your Life, Scooternation

Updated: Jan 2, 2023

You came, you saw, and you were conquered - welcome to the e-scooter mobility revolution.

After hours of research, you made your choice and placed your order…and are chomping at the bit for it to be delivered.

While waiting, whet your appetite on this List of Essentials and gear up before your wheels of pleasure knock on your door. For robust off-road freedom however, some of these essentials should be taken rather seriously. Besides, the powerful scooters from www.escooter-store.com like their riders properly prepped and protected.

1. Helmet

Helmetless scootering days are numbered, in most countries.

On slower e-scooters, open face or half helmets are popular but once your Kaabo, Janobike or Wide Wheel Pro zooms into the 50’s zone and up, it’s time for top protection.

Regardless of helmet prices, style, and level of protection, always fit before buying. Measure circumference of your head above your eyebrows for size…no gaps around your head but not uncomfortably tight either. Put it on, walk and jump around and shake your head to give you an introduction of the action on top when heading to 50mph and more.

A helmet is one of the first things motorists notice, therefore choose your helmet color wisely. Black is stylish but yellow is eye catching…so is white, red and any bright colored helmet.

2. Safety Gear

Any protection is better than nothing, even if it is cheap, plastic, and simple.

  • Eye protection

Should you choose not to wear a full-face helmet or a helmet with a visor, we highly recommend wearing protective glasses or goggles, strong enough to withstand impact. Even on a slow cruise, debris, dust and bugs can momentarily impair your vision or cause injury to an eye.

They should fit properly without squashing your head, sit comfortably and allow some airflow to prevent fogging up. When buying a pair of goggles, make sure that your peripheral vision is not severely restricted.

  • Hands and wrists

Don’t be too tight-fisted with this gear.

Quality designed gloves and wrist bands will insulate your hands and fingers from extreme weather whilst enabling a sturdy grip on brakes and throttle. But when taking a tumble, they must absorb the impact and support sliding on any surface like dirt, tarmac, grass or concrete.

Our hands will be the first to block body impact when falling and our wrists could be forced to take a heavy blow…look after them well.

  • Knees, elbow pads and shoes

When going down flailing, our first instinct is to stiffen up, stop the speeding madness and protect vulnerable body parts. If only we practiced falling like stunt people, we would know to use our meaty parts and roll with the action but we’re scooterers with never an intention to put a foot wrong!

After first contact with hands, landing or skidding on knees, toes and elbows is a painful possibility. Pad those knees and elbows and wear appropriate footwear when you are taking your monster out for more than a stroll.

  • Spine protection

Spine protection may seem a little over the top but always a seriously clever idea if you are into off-road and fast rides.

Protecting your spine will prevent it from arching backwards – in the wrong direction – and displace or even break vertebrae.

And again, it does not have to be super expensive. More affordable gear is still better than nothing and can potentially save your life.

3. Cell Phone Holder

Cell phone holders nowadays are weatherproof gadgets and easily attached to the handlebars.

They’re affordable, readily available and very handy if you need GPS directions with both hands on the scooter handlebar.

4. Lights And Everything LED

If you drive at night, you want to see and be seen.

If your scooter lights are not powerful enough for the roads you travel on, fitting an extra set of LED front lights would be sensible. There are great products available with their own batteries to not interfere with the range of your scooter.

Originally created for cyclists and runners, reflective LED vests and armbands are brilliantly visible and highly recommended for scooterers. Armbands can also be used for signalling in any traffic situation.

There also are extremely useful LED gadgets that you can stick onto your helmet to attract attention.

5. Bell

You will need a bell if your scooter doesn’t come issued with one. No need for a train hooter (although one sometimes feels like blasting the living daylights out of a reckless road user) but a healthy clear sound will do nicely when you need to alert a fellow road user.

6. Mirrors on the Handlebar

Side mirrors are no longer only useful on motorcycles but rather necessary on a scooter if you need to wind your way through hectic traffic. They can be comfortably attached before your hand grips for a good rear view.

7. Backpack

A backpack is a must-have and if it’s brightly colored and weatherproof, even better.

Just a few suggestions to pack although different trips require their own essentials…

  • For an ordinary backpack, a lightweight, waterproof and reflective coverall is practical.

  • Chuck in some UV protection for exposed body parts.

  • Light windbreaker/raincoat - even at low speed, riding drenched can be chilly.

  • Slime or tire sealant for pneumatic tires - inexpensive, easy to use and quick to get you back on the road again.

  • Tire valve extender – if your scooter valves are sitting recessed in the wheel, this short length of tubing is handy to insert slime and connect to a pump.

  • Hand pump for a flat tire.

  • Charging cable, extra battery, torch, snacks…

8. Lock and Chain

With rental scooters people don’t give a flying fudge monkey where they park or what become of their discarded scooter.

As the owner of a high-end brand and superior quality e-scooter however, holding onto your property might call for the steely protection of lock and chain. An ordinary bicycle lock set is ideal.

Secure parking is first prize otherwise make sure your scooter is properly chained and locked for you to enjoy another fantastic ride.

Add to your list of scooter essentials what you like or need. We hope you enjoyed reading this and are just as passionate about e-scooters as we are at E-scooterstore.
